The River

The Kicking Horse Paddle Festival is an annual event that celebrates the great whitewater of the Kicking Horse river, located in Golden, Alberta. It is a glacier fed river, which attracts rafters and kayakers from everywhere. It has four sections that range from class III-V.

The Upper section is consider class III and is mainly rafted. The water is high and also has two class IV's, which can be portaged around. The Middle section is class IV-V and is usually run at lower flows.

The Lower section is a fast-moving class IV section canyon that is fairly committing. It is rafted at low flows and great to kayak at higher flows.

The 'lower' part of the Lower section is a great class II-III float that goes straight into the town of Golden. It is fast moving with no real pools but is a great option for those people who want to paddle into town, or go to the play wave with out having to paddle the Lower.

Depending on flows and timing we are hoping to do a Boater Cross down the class Lower section. To compete in the race you will need to do a Mandatory inspection lap of the lower either on the Friday or the Saturday morning.

For those not able to or wanting compete in the lower race there will most likely be a Lower Lower fun race shortly after.
